Jochen Hahn started the season in the best possible way with an excellent victory in round one of the 2016 FIA European Truck Racing Championship at Red Bull Ring this afternoon.
It was a straightforward victory for the German driving his Team Hahn MAN truck as he led every tour of the 20 lap race.
Hahn defended in to the first corner after the rolling start and was never headed, leading home Rene Reinert and eventually winning the race by 2.642 seconds.
Behind Reinert came Ryan Smith with the British racer scoring the best position of his brief career in the FIA ETRC so far in his OXXO Racing Team run MAN. Smith had to resist pressure from Markus Altenstrasser in the Team Schwabentruck IVECO truck. The Austrian finished just 1.999s behind Smith but takes much momentum in to race two later today.
Unfortunately for Smith his joy was shortlived after a post-race penalty was applied, read here
Fifth and sixth were German duo Sascha Lenz (Lenz MAN) and Gerd Korber (Team Schwabentruck IVECO).
Further down the order there was ferocious battling with Frankie Vojistek sustained damage after battling over 11th position with Anthony Janiec’s Lion Truck entered MAN. Vojistek was given a drive-through penalty after the incident and eventually finished in 14th place.
There was also contact between Norbert Kiss and Adam Lacko at turn two on lap 10. Kiss half-spun his Tankpool24 Racing Mercedes-Benz, while Lacko had a trip through the gravel.
Round two of the championship will take place at 16.30 this afternoon.
