Hahn’s Comfortable Race Three Hungaroring Win

17 June 2018

Jochen Hahn swept to a dominant race three win at Hungaroring this afternoon....

Jochen Hahn took his second victory of the Hungaroring weekend to further extended his advantage at the top of the FIA European Truck Racing Championship points standings.

The four times FIA ETRC champion has now got as clean sweep of feature races wins this season as he guided his Hahn Racing IVECO to a comfortable win this afternoon.

Hahn led from pole to the chequered flag and was able to manage the gap to OXXO Truck Hungary Racing Teams’ Ryan Smith who put in a faultless display after a fraught Saturday at Hungaroring.

Smith was slowly reeled in by Adam Lacko and had to absorb big pressure in the final four laps.

But Lacko had to settle for the final podium position in his Buggyra International Racing System Freightliner after he ran out of laps to fully attack Smith.

Behind the front three there was no shortage of drama as opening lap action saw damage for local hero Norbert Kiss’ Tankpool24 Mercedes-Benz after plenty of contact. Kiss shrugged off the damage and finished fourth.

Behind Kiss there was more action as Antonio Albacete also suffered some damage and Sascha Lenz’s SL Trucksport MAN had a spectacular 360-degree spin exiting Turn 11. Lenz recovered carving his way back through the field to a well-earned eighth place.

His incident, which appeared to be with Antonio Albacete was placed under investigation by the stewards after the race.

Lenz even got a 10-second penalty for overspeeding but had a sufficient gap to stay in his finishing position and earn the reverse grid pole position for the final race later this afternoon.

Rounding out the top six were Steffi Halm (Team Schwabentruck IVECO) who overtook Andre Kursim (Don’t Touch Racing IVECO) in the last phase of the race to claim fifth.

Rene Reinert took seventh position even after getting a 10-second penalty for overspeeding.

There was an entertaining battle between Antonio Albacete (Trucksport Lutz Bernau), Jamie Anderson (Anderson racing MAN) and the recovering Lenz.

When Lenz took both Albacete and Anderson, Terry Gibbon also joined the party in his T Sport MAN and harried Anderson for not only 10th place overall but the lead of the GRAMMER TRUCK CUP.

That became ninth position when Antonio Albacete pitted on the penultimate tour and parked his battered truck.

With Anderson able to extend the gap to Gibbon and ensure a  1-2 for British drivers in the GRAMMER TRUCK CUP, Steffen Faas claimed the final class podium and also 11th place overall.

Oly Janes took fourth in the cup and 12th overall ahead of Shane Brereton and Luis Recuenco. Brereton’s race was compromised by a drive-through penalty for track limit violations.

Erwin Kleinnagelvoort took 15th in his white Scania while Ray Coleman was forced to retire late on in the race after pulling off at Turn 11.

The Teams' points fell to the Die Bullen von IVECO Magirus axis of Hahn and Halm, with smith and Brereton combining to take second for RS Racing.

The final race of the weekend will take place at 15.45 local time.
