Society is facing new challenges due to the change in climate protection and digitalisation and as part of the mobility sector, the transportation and logistics industry play a special role.
Politics have defined legal framework on global and European level (RED II, Regulation 2019/1242) as well as on national levels (e.g. Klimaschutzplan2050 in GER). Besides the imminent shortage of professional truck drivers, this is especially challenging for the commercial vehicle industry from a technological and economical point of view.
As part of the extension of its promotion contract for the Gooyear FIA ETRC, ETRA and their shareholder ADAC Mittelrhein have clearly committed (towards the FIA) to its future strategy in its 5-year agenda. This strategy is based on improving and enhancing the three pillars of safety, shortage of professional truck drivers and sustainability transformation.__________
OBJECTIVE I
To reach net zero emission by 2038 at the lastest
OBJECTIVE II
To become a leading platform for sustainable technologies in the road haulage industry
__________
OUR APPROACH
All race trucks are fueled by 100% HVO diesel. HVO stands for Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil and is a premium fossil-free diesel product made of 100% renewable raw materials, which does not release any new carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. HVO meets the Advanced Sustainable (AS) fuel criteria, which state that the fuel must reach greenhouse gas emissions savings of at least 65% over the entire cycle from well to wheel and complies with the European Union’s Renewable Energy Directive II (RED II). |
|
IVECO is providing a Bio-LNG (liquefied natural gas)-powered IVECO S-WAY NP as the pace truck for all events. Next to HVO, the Bio-LNG-powered pace truck is the second technology on the truck racing grid, as a further step of the championship to accommodate technical developments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions on track. |
ACCEPTED BY UNITED NATIONS SPORTS FOR CLIMATE ACTION FRAMEWORK
The European Truck Racing Association (ETRA) has become a signatory to the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework, to help implement the Paris Agreement and to accelerate the transformative change needed to reach greenhouse gas emission neutrality by 2050 at the latest. ETRA has extended its commitment by signing up to the Race to Zero campaign, which pledges to reach net zero in the 2040s or sooner. |
ON-TRACK GHG REDUCTION
The introduction of HVO100 in the Goodyear FIA ETRC is part of the FIA’s long-term strategy to implement sustainable power sources acrossits portfolio of motor sport disciplines, and thus setting an example in the approach of reduction of CO2 emission by leading the development and promotion of new technologies throughout its competitions.
Motor sport’s positive contribution to the environment is also one of the four pillars of the FIA’s #PurposeDriven movement, with the other three being contributions to areas such as health and safety, diversity and inclusion as well as community involvement and development
PAVING THE WAY FOR NEW TECHNOLOGIES ON THE GRID
A group of specialists from the FIA Technical Department has been working on the energy transformation process for a long time with the aim to be technically prepared to welcome any technology and energy form, powered by synthetic fuel, hydrogen or battery electric, on the same grid soon.
To guarantee a fair, technology-open competition, technology-equalising measures are necessary - this requires a so called EQT (Equalisation of Technologies).
The FIA experts are also working on ensuring sufficient energy availability at the race tracks in order to be able to supply hydrogen and, above all, battery-electric vehicles sufficiently and quickly in the future.
