Jochen Hahn took a clear victory in the first race of the weekend at Hungaroring this afternoon. Hahn controlled the 11-lap race leading home local hero Nobert Kiss by 2.219 seconds to re-claim the championship points lead after rival Adam Lacko finished in fifth position.
Hahn led in to the first turn and despite an impressive Ryan Smith initially hanging on to the rear of the Hahn Racing MAN, it was the German who was able to control the pace throughout to take another victory in his quest to take the 2016 FIA ETRC title. He now leads Lacko by 11 points.
Crowd favourite Norbert Kiss sent the crowd wild on lap three when he pulled off a superb move on Anthony Janiec to take third position at the final corner. The Tankpool24 Racing Mercedes-Benz driver then chased down Smith who had to defend his second place vigorously.
The battle entertained a huge Hungaroring crowd who cheered on every attempt by Kiss to pass Smith’s OXXO Racing Team MAN. The reigning champion made a move stick at Turn 12 on the last lap in a spectacular finale to the race. Kiss’ podium was cheered loudly as he crossed the line to claim 15 points and the adulation of his countrymen after a brilliant race.
Taking fourth position was Anthony Janiec in his Lion Truck Racing MAN entry. The Frenchman was able to ward off Adam Lacko who had a relatively quiet race in his Buggyra International Racing System ‘FatFox’ to take fifth position.
Gerhard Korber claimed sixth, while Steffi Halm fought back from a first lap incident take seventh. The final points scoring positions were taken by Frankie Vojtisek, Andre Kursim - taking his first points in FIA ETRC, and British driver Shane Brereton.
The two final finishers were Dutchman Erwin Kleinnagelfort in 11th and France’s Dominique Orsini in 12th place.
There were three retirements in race one as an incident on the first lap at turn three saw Steffi Halm lose control and cause Andre Kursim and Jiri Forman to take avoiding action. Forman headed pitwards on lap three with damage, along with Ellen Lohr, who had damage to the left rear of her truck due to first lap contact. Sascha Lenz ran well early on but stopped his truck on lap five with steering issues.
Kiss and Kursim collated enough points to take victory in the FIA ETRC teams’ championship as they beat Team Reinert Adventure by a single point. Third was the Lion/Lenz pairing of Anthony Janiec and Sascha Lenz.
The second race, which will start with a reversed top ten grid of the first result, is scheduled to begin at 15.45 local time.
